Classic Album Review: Various Artists | JamGrass: A Phish Tribute

A crew of Nashville studio pickers deliver a bluegrass tribute to the jam veterans.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

I know what you’re thinking — and no, it’s not that kind of grass.

It’s bluegrass that fuels this intriguingly oddball tribute disc to eclectic jam-masters Phish. Helmed by a cast of Nashville studio rats, this disc delivers relaxed, rootsy revamps of Phish oldies and faves like Birds Of A Feather, Chalk Dust Torture, Down With Disease and Sample In A Jar. Why anybody felt the need to produce back-porch breakdowns of these cuts, I haven’t a clue. I’m just glad they did. I suspect the band’s phervent phaithphful phans will be too. And hey, who knows? Maybe the boys themselves will cover the album in its entirety for their next Halloween show.
