Classic Album Review: The Crystal Method | Legion Of Boom

The long-running electronica duo don’t sound much like the future anymore.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

In 1997, electronica duos like The Crystal Method and Chemical Brothers were supposed to take over the world. And Big Beat was supposed to be the next big thing — the sound of the future.

Well, guess what? Seven years later, those whumping basslines and block-rockin’ beats and squelchy keyboards and hypnotic grooves and stuttery vocal samples — all of which The Crystal Method are still trotting out on their cliche-riddled third disc Legion Of Boom — don’t sound like the future anymore. They just sound like 1997. So unless you’ve been in a coma since Prodigy’s last album, Boom is a bust.
