Kevin Drew is getting older just like the rest of us. And dealing with the joys and tragedies that it brings. But unlike most of us, he has the ability to channel those experiences into gorgeous and personal works of art.
I’m referring, of course, to his latest solo album, the fittingly titled Aging. Inspired by a series of recent losses in his life, the Broken Social Scene frontman and his collaborator Nyles Spencer have crafted an immersive record from layers of lush synths, low-impact beatboxes and Drew’s earnest, dreamy vocals. Not bad for a project that started out as a children’s album. With Aging out on vinyl and arriving digitally Nov. 3, the 47-year-old singer Zoomed in from his Toronto digs for a wide-ranging chat about unleashing his inner child, tattoos, the brilliance of Warren Zevon, the next Broken Social Scene album and a lot more. Enjoy.
