Classic Album Review: The Stills | Rememberese

Everything old sounds new again on the Montreal post-punks' debut EP.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Montreal’s Stills are new on the scene — this four-song EP is their debut release — but they’re one of those bands you’d swear you’ve heard before.

Maybe that’s because you’ve probably heard most if not all the bands that so clearly and heavily influenced their post-punk sound. With their choppy guitars, dour melodies, chugging basslines and chilly ambience, they’re just one of a jillion bands this year openly proclaiming their allegiance to Joy Division and Echo And The Bunnymen. Still, they do it well enough on this 15-minute disc that you want to hear more. Even if it just more of the same.
