John Moran reminds us we’re Not Dead Yet in his lively, charmingly eccentric new indie-pop single — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.
The sophomore release from the St. John’s singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, the vibrant Not Dead Yet takes you on a bittersweet, gently psychedelic trip down memory lane, as Moran reminisces about a long-lost friend — perhaps even a childhood sweetheart — and thinks about reconnecting (even though he probably won’t):
“Back when we were kids we used to be friends
Dancing in the hallway holding hands
Laughing at the pictures in the picture frames
We’re not dead yet
I remember those days
Though they’re so far off
“I don’t think about them all that much
But I think of you
And I hope that you think of me too
One way to find out
Call up and say hi
Tell me about
All the good times.”
Thankfully, the good times are just beginning for Moran. The Newfoundland talent has toured Canada, Europe and Greenland with various outfits from Ontario and Newfoundland, and recently finished recording an album with Jake Nicoll (whose innovative production helped garner a Polaris Prize nomination for Kelly McMichael’s 2021 album Waves).
Not Dead Yet was co-produced, recorded and engineered by Nicoll at Studio J in St John’s, and mastered by Sarah Harris. In addition to writing and singing Not Dead Yet, Moran plays guitar, bass, piano, synth and percussion on the track, while Nicoll supplies backup vocals and percussion. Moran, Nicoll and Jake Etchegary all programmed the drum machine.
