Classic Album Review: Susan Tedeschi | Wait For Me

The bluesy singer-guitarist offers a decliciously soulful set of gusty blues-rock.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

At the Grammy Awards in 2000, bluesy singer-guitarist Susan Tedeschi was up for Best New Artist alongside Britney, Christina, Macy Gray and Kid Rock. Guess who went home empty-handed? Put it this way: Not Christina.

But don’t feel sorry for Tedeschi; things haven’t worked out so bad for her either. Since then, the Massachusetts talent has become a wife (to guitarist Derek Trucks), a mother (to their first son) — and issued the strongest album of her still-ascending career. The delicious 11-song effort Wait For Me is a soulful set of Bonnie Raitt-style blues and roots-rock, fuelled by Tedeschi’s gutsy vocals, propelled by her band’s earthy grooves and graced by a bit of help from Trucks’ stinging slide guitar. Released in the U.S. last year, it was enough to earn her another Grammy nod — for Best Female Rock Vocal, next to Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Melissa Etheridge and Avril Lavigne. She didn’t win this time, either. But not to worry. The way she’s going, the third time is bound to be the charm.
