Luna Red undertakes a life-changing Journey To Self on her powerful and thought-provoking new EP — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.
The latest release from the multifaceted performing artist from Tkaronto, Ont., Journey To Self finds Luna Red embarking on a futuristic expedition into her heritage, exploring topical themes to the strains of introspective, compellig R&B and synth-pop tracks like Runnin’, Rise Up, Culture and Divine.
“This EP came from a place of exploration as I navigate through my spirituality, culture and Afro-Indigenous identity,” says Luna Red (aka Teineisha Richards). “As an Afro-Indigenous woman and an R&B/pop artist navigating through a time of social uproar and cries for justice, I am determined to share my journey to self-love, empowerment and cultural awakening. I aim to share my vision on the potential realities for our people.
“I want to challenge the history that was forced upon us by western society and tell a different story — one of love, divine power, unity and peace between Black and Indigenous Peoples. I strive to entertain my audience and while I have their attention, I aim to share a valuable lesson,” she continues.
“I aim to create songs that entice people to think outside of the box and to go against the status quo of “beauty”, love, gender roles, culture, religion /spirituality and history. Through my music, I want to encourage others to see beyond the stereotypes, and to self-reflect on one’s own biases, while at the same time, empower the historically oppressed groups of Canada. My EP is the starting piece to a larger project, which will eventually be accompanied by emotionally provoking and empowering music videos or visuals.
“I want to reignite the power and love within our people. I want to play an integral part in reconnecting communities and building unity to fight the larger fight. I am excited to create meaningful music that has purpose, that not only speaks to me, but others like me. With that being said, I’d like to explore the following questions: What are they hiding from us about us? What if we remembered? How do we remember? How do we reunite as a people?”
