Sarah MK helps you make it to the other side with her soulful and supple single MITTOS — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.
The first single from the Canadian singer-songwriter’s upcoming sophomore album Wax & Gold, the magnetically mellow MITTOS elegantly glides into your world with a late-night groove, warmly ringing electric pianos, whistling synths and jazzy, syncopated guitar licks. But the spotlight truly belongs to Sarah MK‘s smoky, sweetly soothing vocals as she delivers an ode to persistence and perseverance that is simultaneously personal and universal.
“I wrote this song a few years back for a friend of mine going through a difficult time in her life,” Sarah MK explains. “I just wanted her to know that no matter what she’s facing, she’s going to get through it and make it out. The song seems just as poignant now speaking to the whole world as we try to navigate living through a global pandemic.”
With vocals evocative of queens like Solange, Erykah Badu or Sade — and music that feels like it was plucked straight from a Soulquarians recording session circa 1999 — MITTOS makes a fine introduction to Wax & Gold, which drops April 27. Some eight years in the making, the album is the long-overdue followup to her critically successful 2011 debut Worth It.
Well recognized on the local scene for her vocal talents and ability to strike a balance between soul, contemporary R&B, hip-hop and jazz, Sarah MK has collaborated with Abraham Inc. (feat. Fred Wesley, Socalled & David Krakauer), Anomalie, Dubmatique, Dead Obies and Brown. She also spends her time with the feminine group Lotus Collective, where she acts as co-musical director and keyboardist and teaches music part time in elementary and high schools.
