This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
There are more space-age bachelor-pad compilations out there than you can shake a dry martini at. But few can hold a cocktail weenie to the authentic, well composed Sounds From the Verve Hi-Fi.
That has everything to do with who compiled it: the renowned D.C. electro-lounge connoisseurs known as Thievery Corporation. With the taste, enthusiasm and reverence of the jazz buffs they are, the duo dive deep into Verve Records’ vault and resurface with 15 pieces of primo buried treasure from the swinging ’50s, ’60s and ’70s. Think funky flutes, ringing vibes, percolating organs, sitars and conga backbeats. Think crisp, cool jazz, lightly bumpy mambos and breathy chanteueses. Think Astrud Gilberto doing Light My Fire, Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery double-teaming OGD, and Sergio Mendes and Brazil ’66. Now try to think of a good reason not to own it.
