The inevitable death of the CD moved one step closer to fruition this week when New Zealand pop juggernaut Lorde announced that her upcoming album Solar Power will be a discless release — fans who want a physical object (and aren’t into vinyl) will be able to buy a so-called music box with lyrics, artwork and a download card.
Granted, she’s not the first person to refrain from a CD release — but she’s arguably the highest-profile artist to opt out, and could prompt other artists to follow suit. It’s a big deal — and well worth five minutes of debate by PR superstar Eric Alper and I in today’s Sonic Reducers segment. Join us as ponder Lorde’s decision, discuss the noble but difficult world of eco-friendly artistry, and yearn for the end of the CD — if only so nostalgia can kick in and I can finally sell my 50,000 discs for a tidy sum. Sonic Reducers. One topic. Two music nerds. Five minutes. Everything you need to know.
