Albums Of The Week: Mythic Sunship | Wildfire

The Copenhagen quintet test their sonic boundaries on this shape-shifting outing.

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “With a band name mingled from album titles by John Coltrane and Sun Ra, one might expect Mythic Sunship to be a jazz band. This is not quite the case, although the Copenhagen quartet shares a similar sense of exploration and general untamedness with the two masters of cosmic jazz. The destination is transcendence, but the vehicle is assembled from decades of rock! Not your dad’s rock (unless your dad hung out in Münich or Wümme in the early 1970s, that is), but nonetheless rock, where ferocious drum-pounding and thick Geezery basslines add fuel to an endless pyre of blazed-out dual fuzz-guitar action. This stuff is wild.

With their new album Wildfire, Mythic Sunship begin a new chapter of the free-form rock journey that has seen them put out a critically acclaimed album annually for the last five years and made them one of Europe’s most interesting new psychedelic bands. Ripping apart the foundation that previous albums were built upon, the group present an album showcasing their sound at its most primal form. Recorded over four intense days in Stockholm’s generously vintage RMV Studio, the album documents the erratic, visceral, untameable musical organism that Mythic Sunship become once unleashed in improvisatory interplay. Working with legendary Danish punk Per Buhl Acs behind the mixing desk to test their sonic boundaries, they’ve put together a set of raw, kinetic outbursts that take the listener from the groovy fuzz-rock and cosmic jams that the band is known and loved for into new territories of crunched melodies, uncanny harmonies, turbulent rhythms and even more ecstatic walls of guitar insanity.

With five acclaimed releases in as many years, Mythic Sunship have rapidly established themselves among Europe’s finest purveyors of psychedelic music, bridging the gap between heavy riff worshipping and expansive, free jazz-tinged experimentation. Not ones to rest on their laurels, Mythic Sunship went back to the drawing board in search of fresh ideas and new approaches to their self-styled “anaconda rock.” Wildfire is the exhilarating result, simultaneously showcasing Mythic Sunship’s scorched-earth, visceral approach as well as their penchant for crafting epic journeys through time and space.”
