Unlike Iggy Pop, Morrissey does not want to be your dog. At least, that’s what the provocative former Smiths frontman seems to be stressing with the title of his upcoming studio album. I Am Not A Dog On A Chain is due in March according to reports, and includes songs with typically intriguing titles like Jim Jim Falls, Love Is On Its Way Out, Bobby, Don’t You Think They Know?, What Kind Of People Live In These Houses?, Darling, I Hug A Pillow, Once I Saw The River Clean, The Truth About Ruth, The Secret Of Music and My Hurling Days Are Done. Undoubtedly, it will produce reactions ranging from fawning praise to furious outrage, based upon a whole slate of irrelevant factors, including everything the button-pushing singer says and does between now and then. Whatever; I’ll take the radical approach of waiting to see if I like the songs, and go from there. Morrissey is also planning to reissue remastered, updated versions of several previous studio albums next year, so even though I Am Not a Dog is reportedly his last album under his current BMG contract, he’s not going to fade away just yet.
