A rock legend reconnects to his roots, an indie-rock powerhouse flexes new muscles and some Aussie oddballs keep it weird in today’s tsunami of additions your fall music calendar.
Let’s start with the biggest name on the list: Alice Cooper, whose new EP Breadcrumbs — coming Sept. 13 — will be a “tribute to the garage rock heroes from his hometown Detroit.” Fittingly, the set list includes covers of MC5’s Sister Anne, Suzi Quatro’s Your Mamma Won’t Like Me and Mitch Ryder’s Devil With a Blue Dress, while the cast features MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer, Grand Funk Railroad frontman Mark Farner, Detroit Wheels drummer Johnny “Bee” Badanjek and Gories/Dirtbombs leader Mick Collins.
Sounds like a winner. And it’s not alone. Veteran singer-songwriter Mark Lanegan — whose extensive resume includes Screaming Trees, QOTSA, Twilight Singers and more — delivers his latest dark-hearted solo album Somebody’s Knocking on Oct. 18. Check out the first single Letter Never Sent — which embraces a New Wave sound at odds with his usual grim approach — below.
One more release of note: Australian weirdos Tropical Fuck Storm, whose A Laughing Death in Meatspace was one of the best albums of 2018 (read my review HERE). I expect no less from their sophomore set Braindrops, which drops Aug. 23. Get a taste of what you’re in for below, while you peruse the rest of today’s entries. And as always, be sure to head over to the Upcoming Releases page for the entire fall lineup, which also includes new major-label offerings from Big Wreck and Melanie Martinez.
