WHO IS SHE? The latest musical incarnation of the former Hannah Montana, onetime award-show twerk provocateur, occasional drug buddy of Wayne Coyne, current wife of Liam Hemsworth and grown daughter of Billy Ray.
WHAT IS THIS? A strikingly strong six-track EP — supposedly the first of three in the She Is series — that finds her dishing out frank feminist anthems, dark druggy ballads and low-key party grooves with assists from Ghostface Killah, RuPaul, Swae Lee and Mike Will Made-It.
WHAT DOES IT SOUND LIKE? It’s not quite as freaky as 2015’s Flaming Lipsian Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz — but it’s definitely a much-welcome return to form after 2017’s retro retreat Younger Now.
WHAT WOULD BE A BETTER TITLE FOR THIS ALBUM? It’s really hard to top the one it’s got.
HOW SHOULD I LISTEN TO IT? With people who aren’t going to give you crap about it.
WHAT 10 WORDS DESCRIBE IT? Empowered, weird, gutsy, sassy, stoned, free, mellow, confident, eclectic, quirky.
WHAT ARE THE BEST SONGS? Mother’s Daughter and Cattitude are in your face, while the Wu Tang Clan-inspired D.R.E.A.M. (Drugs Rule Everything Around Me) flips the script.
WHAT WILL MY FRIENDS AND FAMILY THINK? That you’re too old to be listening to Miley Cyrus.
HOW OFTEN WILL I LISTEN TO THIS? You probably won’t have to — several of these cuts are sure to be saturating airwaves any second.
IF THIS ALBUM WERE A STATE, WHAT STATE WOULD IT BE? California.
SHOULD I BUY, STREAM OR STEAL? Stream for now; after all, there’s more on the way.
