Classic Album Review: Gomez | Out West

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

I read somewhere that Gomez got a record deal before they played a gig.

True or not, it hasn’t prevented them from evolving into a fiery live act, as documented on their debut concert recording Out West. This two-disc set, taped earlier this year during a three-night stand at San Francisco’s Fillmore, finds the British avant-blues quintet rocking up tunes from all their albums, putting the guitars front and centre and toning down some of the more experimental aspects of the studio versions. Bonus points for a whomping cover of Tom WaitsGoing Out West and an earthy reading of Nick Drake’s Black Eyed Dog. So where’s the DVD?
