Classic Album Review: Beatsteaks | Smacksmash

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Already worn out your copy of Foo FightersIn Your Honor? Treat yourself to a new half-hour of post-grunge power with Smacksmash, the third album from Germany’s Beatsteaks.

These dozen cuts have the same charging beats, the same pounding drums, the same churning buzzsaw guitars — and a singer whose vocals usually fall somewhere between bellowing and bloodcurdling. To their credit, they’ve also got tunes that veer off into choppy Clash-style punk, pugnacious new wave, frenzied punk-pop and darkly grinding reggae-rock. Which is to say: While Beatsteaks serve up plenty of Foo for thought, they’re more than just a bunch of Nirvanabes. (Sorry. It was right there. I couldn’t resist.)
