This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
Soul-sister Sharon Jones hails from James Brown’s home town. Listen to Naturally, her second album with get-down backing band The Dap-Kings, and you won’t be surprised.
In fact, between all the hypnotically syncopated funk, wah-wah guitar licks and punchy horns, you might think the take-charge diva grew up in Soul Brother No. 1’s basement. Though Jones’ confident way of embracing a supple, done-wrong ballad makes it clear she’s equally at home in the company of women like Aretha Franklin and Tina Turner. To which I can only say: Right on.
