Classic Album Review: Dave Holland | Overtime

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Dave Holland played on Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew. If he had done nothing else, that would have assured him a place in jazz history.

But for Holland, that was just the start of a lengthy career as first-call sideman and leader of his own ensembles. Overtime finds him fronting his big band on an eclectic 78-minute set of everything from snappy swing to funky free jazz. Best of all: The massive, adventurous four-part Monterey Suite fuelled by interlaced horns and anchored by Holland’s ropy basslines.
