Classic Album Review: Secret Machines | The Road Leads Where It’s Led

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Between-album EPs can be pretty skippable. Thankfully, this six-song set from N.Y.C. trio The Secret Machines might be the exception that proves the rule.

Yes, the title cut is off their 2004 album Now Here Is Nowhere. And yes, there’s only one other original tune that’s nothing special. What is special, though, are the covers of Van Morrison’s Astral Weeks, the chestnut Money (That’s What I Want), Bob Dylan’s Girl From The North Country and Harmonia’s Krautrock obscurity De Luxe (Immer Weider), all refurbished with the Machines’ blend of swaggering Zeppish bombast and lush Cure-like luxury. They make this Road a scenic little detour.
