If you know who Hagfish are, you are in for a treat. And if you don’t, you’re in for an even bigger one.
One of the best bands most folks have never heard of, let alone heard, the Texas quartet’s sophomore album …Rocks Your Lame Ass stands as one of the lost gems of the ’90s. And because it came out at the height of the CD era, it is a record that has never seen a vinyl pressing. Until now. This pop-punk gem has been unearthed, dusted off and repressed for the first time on limited-edition orange vinyl, due out July 1.
For those who need the backstory: Coming straight outta from Dallas, Hagfish delivered the perfect blend of punk and power-pop. Released in 1995 — two years after their indie debut Buick Men — …Rocks Your Lame Ass was a defining moment for the band. Produced by Descendents members Bill Stevenson and Stephen Egerton and originally released on London Records, it packs a Ramones-style wallop and birthed MTV videos for the songs Stamp and Happiness.
The band were voted Dallas’s best Alternative Rock/Pop Act in 1996. With blazing guitars courtesy of Zach Blair and the nasal vocal delivery of George Reagan, …Rocks Your Lame Ass sizzles with two minute punk and power-pop stylings that stick like glue. After the band broke up in the mid ’90s, guitarist Blair went on to join forces with Rise Against and Gwar, while his bassist brother Doni Blair joined alternative rockers The Toadies. Fine pedigrees indeed.
Porterhouse Records will be pressing a 500-copy limited run on opaque orange vinyl. The package will include liner notes with previously unpublished photos. Pre-sales for the release are up and running HERE and will go fast. And if all that isn’t good enough, Hagfish will also be supporting the release with live shows in the future. So get ready to have your lame ass rocked in person.
