Classic Album Review: The Nein | Wrath Of Circuits

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Whaddaya call it when you merge angular post-punk guitars, grinding Stranglers basslines, clanky drumbeats, discordant pianos, burnished pop melodies, sandy Beatlesque vocals, rich Costelloish melodies, swirly head trips, gritty tape manipulations and hissy noise-rock experiments?

Don’t know? Damn. I was hoping somebody would have a pithy way to sum up the art-damaged, electro-tinged noise-pop of Wrath of Circuits, the debut from North Carolina freakazoids The Nein. All I can think to call it is compelling. Exceptional. And freaking cool. Guess that’ll have to do.
