This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
As someone much smarter than I once noted: You can dance if you want to — or you can leave your past behind. French house DJ Laurent Garnier is clearly opting for the latter on Cloud-Making Machine.
Picking up where he left off on 2000’s Unreasonable Behaviour, Garnier douses the lights, unhooks the glitter ball and crafts low-key works that fuse moody pianos and jazzy melodies to brooding synths on a slate of twitchy techno, downtempo house and hip-hop — and one gritty Lou Reed-meets-Iggy Pop rocker in (I Wanna Be) Waiting For My Plane. If you’re a filmmaker with a futuristic romantic thriller in need of a soundtrack, wait no longer.
