Classic DVD Review: The Stranglers | Live ’78, SF

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

This vintage slice of British post-punk is the latest title in MVD’s continuing quest to reissue all the classic Target videos on DVD in 5.1 sound.

And certainly there’s no quibbling with the historic value of this title, which captures the original Stranglers lineup of singer-guitarist Hugh Cornwell, singer-bassist J.J. Burnel, drummer Jet Black and keyboardist Dave Greenfield on their debut U.S. tour. But there are other things you could quibble over. Like the fact that the set was shot in grainy B&W and then subjected to the sort of cheesy post-production (“Hey, let’s put some flames behind them!”) common to public-access airwaves of the era. Or that it’s only about 20 minutes long and has just six songs (with a seventh over the credits). Or that none of those songs is Peaches. All that said, if you’re a fan, you’ll dig it anyway. If not, you might want to get a grip on yourself.
