Albums Of The Week: Mustang McGee | Horseplay

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “Originally from Memphis but now living in Nashville, Mustang McGee is a mustachioed bassist who identifies as a horse. Mustang is keenly known for his highly energetic performance presence on stage as a member of Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country. In his solo musical efforts, Mustang explores soul, rock and folk music. Drawing influence from decades of sounds, Mustang creatively creates post-modern sonic scenes that leave listeners exclaiming, ‘When was this made?’ and ‘Wow, I love this!’

McGee’s debut release It’s Mustang Time was a retro-rock, blues, and country blend with longtime collaborator and friend Donato. Horseplay picks up right where that left off with songs like For A Long Time, an inside look at the early frustrations of being a touring musician. The single blends the sounds of alt-country and indie a la My Morning Jacket and Wilco, with touches of ’80s-era Grateful Dead and vocal harmonies reminiscent of yacht rock classics.

Meanwhile, Here And Now is a positive and uplifting track about “living in the present and finding your truth in moment,” says McGee. The track blends rock, alternative, blues, and soul sounds with nods to legendary acts such as Steely Dan, Paul McCartney and John Mayer.”
