THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “Live At The Leather Fly documents Butthole Surfers’ legendary live show. Mixed by guitarist Paul Leary, the album channels their ferocious stage energy into a speaker-bursting cacophony across 21 unrelenting songs — including fan favorites from Human Cannonball to The Annoying Song.
The title comes from a bit of band lore, says Leary “Back in the ’80s, Gibby (Haynes, the Austin band’s notorious frontman) used to fantasize about a nightclub called The Leather Fly. He wanted it to have a stuffed leather fly hanging in front of it. There were two (fictional) competing promoters on the scene: Steak Watson and Lady Corn Wilson.”
If that isn’t enough to entice you to visit the Surfers’ Leather Fly, how about the endorsements of some fellow Austinites and/or indie-rockers? “There is kind of a before and after when you wander into a Butthole Surfers show,” says filmmaker Richard Linklater. “That is a changing point in your life.” Add Ween guitarist and vocalist Dean Ween, without reservation: “Butthole Surfers are the greatest live band of my lifetime.”
