Classic Album Review: New Order | Waiting For The Sirens’ Call

The dance-rock vets make it clear they haven't run out of smooth moves just yet.

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

With dance-rock back in full force — and buzz bands from The Killers to The Bravery wearing their New Order influence on their tailored sleeves — you might think these old-school icons are no longer relevant or required.

Waiting For The Sirens’ CallNew Order’s eighth studio effort and second disc since a lengthy ’90s layoff — makes it clear you’d be wrong. Deftly balancing the choppy guitar-pop and tender vocals of Bernard Sumner with the slinky backbeats of lead bassist Peter Hook and drummer Stephen Morris, this 11-track collection of strong, song-oriented cuts confirms these post-punk icons haven’t lost touch with their muse. And that they still have enough moves up their own sleeves to teach the young ’uns a step or two.
