Classic Album Review: Various Artists | The Eagle Records Collection

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

 


The Guess Who may have been Winnipeg’s best-known band back in the ’60s, but they were far from the only band.

This extensive set compiles an impressive 30 long-lost garage-rock nuggets from local heroes like The Shondels, The Pallbearers, The Shags, Good Fortune and The Quid. As a historical artifact, it’s pretty cool. Even cooler: Most of these tunes actually kick ass.

STYLE: Classic ’60s garage-rock, Peg-style.

SOUNDS LIKE: Your parents’ 45 collection.

STANDOUT: Satan & The D-Men win the best band name prize — and their organ-drenched She’ll Lie is a winner too. Then again, so is The Pallbearers’ echo-chamber breakup rocker Now We’re Through. And The Shags’ psychedelic Smiling Fenceposts. And The Quid’s revved-up boogie Crazy Things. And …
