Classic Album Review: Jack Logan | Nature’s Assembly Line

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Sheryl Crow had her Tuesday Night Music Club. Jack Logan had his Monday Night Recording Club.

Beginning in 2003, the lo-fi rocker, garage mechanic and compulsive tunesmith would get together weekly with friends in Athens, Ga., write and record three songs, and then erase the original tapes to prevent second thoughts. The best 15 of them are gathered on his ninth release Nature’s Assembly Line. Like you’d figure, most of these folk-rocky cuts sound like the underproduced home recordings they are. Unlike you’d figure, most of them don’t sound like they were written on the fly, thanks mostly to Logan’s uncanny ability to pull thoughtful lyrics and hooky melodies out of thin air like some southern version of Robert Pollard. With Nature’s Assembly Line, Logan’s in fine form — and in good company.
