This came out in 2005 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
“One day I’ll grow up to be a beautiful woman,” croons one-named singer-songwriter Antony on his second album. Like we didn’t already suspect.
All it takes is one listen to his quavering, languid vocals (think Tiger Lillies meets Tindersticks) and elegantly melancholy piano balladry to understand where he’s coming from. Lou Reed fans might recall Antony from The Raven and Animal Serenade; Reed returns the favour here on the soulful Fistful of Love. Contemporaries like Rufus Wainwright and icons like Boy George also lend a hand, but make no mistake: This is Antony’s album, and he commands the spotlight with unmistakable pipes and mournful compositions. Here’s hoping all his dreams come true.
