The Moulettes Know How To Command Your Attention

The U.K. art-rockers celebrate human communion — & announce a Canadian tour.

The Moulettes remind you to put down your phone and pay Attention to the real world with their engrossing song and video — showcasing today on Tinnitist.

Taken from the English art-rock ensemble’s ambitiously epic multi-media project Xenolalia — a multimedia artbook & groundbreaking experiment in collaboration and composition — Attention serves as a timely heads-up to let you know there’s life (and love) beyond your social media feed.

“This song started tongue-in-cheek, just a reminder to extricate ourselves from the digital dimension for some analogue human love time,” says singer and cellist Hannah Miller (aka Hannah Moule). “I had read this quote which struck a chord with me, ‘Attention is the rarest and purest form of generosity’ which I later found was attributed to Simone Weil. It’s really about human communion, the only thing that will get us through this Existathon™.

“We wanted to a make you a big joyful playground of cheeky references to our favourite bits from the musical time machine — ’50s doo-wop, 60s psychedelic playfulness and some ’80s bombast amalgamated into one maximalist sandwich. This is a song to bring the party.”

And there’s plenty more where that came from. Attention is just one of 55 pieces of music in Xenolalia, a vast multi-media project that takes the listener on a journey through the Moultiverse via QR code that link to lyrics, interviews and stories that illuminate the songs contained within. For those who would really like to take Attention’s message to heart and experience it in reality, they band will be returning to Canada in February to play nearly a dozen shows in Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta.

Since their formation at Glastonbury Festival 2002, the ever-evolving collective have forged an uncommon course. From the avant-folk of their early albums, to the cinematic chamber pop of 2014 album Constellations and the big riffs of sonic chameleon Preternatural, The Moulettes put creativity at the heart of everything they do. They offer something unique and musically kaleidoscopic, interweaving guitar, synths and percussion with strings and five-part harmonies in playfully eclectic symbiosis. They often performing in the round where possible so audiences can tangibly feel their instinctive communication with each other, and the sheer joy of playing as an ensemble.

The Moulettes have had support from many quarters, garnering praise and appreciation in the worlds of folk, prog and indie. As champions of detailed, original music and sharp songwriting, they have earned their accolades. As they reinvent and reimagine themselves with a revolving cast of exceptional musicians, The Moulettes’ music is always distinctively recognisable.
