Shriya Experiences A Range Of Emotions In A Box

The Indian singer-songwriter’s EP chronicles her journey into young adulthood.

Shriya explores love, loss and resilience on her debut EP In A Box — showcasing today on Tinnitist.

The rising Indian artist’s introductory release is a powerful examination of heartbreak, mental health, and self-discovery. This collection captures a range of raw and honest emotions, resonating with listeners through its reflective and openhearted approach. All the tracks were fully composed, written, and sung by Shriya.

In A Box is a collection of ballads for those experiencing heartbreak, loss, or personal transitions. Shriya began writing these songs at age 16, and the collection serves as a deeply personal chronicle of her journey into young adulthood. Her lyrics address the challenges of being an independent artist and the pressure to meet constant expectations. Although the EP speaks most to teenagers, its themes of character and self-acceptance are universally relatable. “Music is the one thing that keeps me going,” she says. “It’s always there when I need it.” Through her music, she opens a window into her world, creating a space for listeners to find connection and empathy.

The EP opens with Her, standing out for its emotional depth and rich instrumentation. Produced by Yohan Marshall, mixed by Pedro Peixoto (Iza, Ana Vitoria) and mastered by Fili Filizzola (Doja Cat, SZA), Her captures the complexities of heartache and lost trust with soul-stirring songwriting, raw lyrics, and cinematic musical elements. Set against a classical piano backdrop, this song expresses the universal pain of betrayal, written to help process her first experience with broken trust.

The second track, I’m Not Alright, touches on Shriya’s personal mental health journey. “It’s a powerful anthem for anyone who has ever felt alone in their battles,” she says. This track fuses somber yet comforting melodies, offering a heartfelt reflection on the courage it takes to confront life’s challenges. With Hersh Desai’s production, Shriya’s soft progression, and immersive harmonies, the song creates a serene soundscape that resonates with anyone who has faced feelings of isolation. She reminds listeners that “it’s OK not to feel OK” — a message she hopes can bring comfort and solidarity to fans.

The third track, Are You Down, is a catchy R&B-inspired cut that explores the excitement of hoping a crush shares your feelings. Produced and mixed by Desai and mastered by Filizzola, the song highlights her confident, fresh approach to love. The EP closes with Dream About It, which showcases Shriya’s harmonies as they transport audiences into a nostalgic reverie, revisiting memories of infatuation and unfulfilled dreams. The track’s gentle melodies create a soothing yet wistful atmosphere, illustrating the poignant longing for a time that has passed.

At just 18 years old, Shriya is making waves in the pop and R&B scene with her vibrant and innovative sound. She seamlessly blends jazz elements with R&B and soul to craft unforgettable songs containing lush harmonies, and lyrics that truly resonate. Bursting onto the scene at just 14 with her debut single Tell Me, Shriya has since performed at over 50 live venues, refining a musical style influenced by jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Antônio Carlos Jobim, as well as contemporary artists such as Daniel Caesar, Summer Walker and Erykah Badu. Her genre-blending approach has earned her coveted spots on playlists, and she’s lent her voice to ad campaigns for top brands.

At 17, she released Ride For Me and On My Mind, which collectively garnered over 180,000 views, with the latter amassing over 50,000 streams along with widespread acclaim. Additionally, she has been shortlisted in the top five nominees in the Best Female Category under the Jury’s Choice for her song On My Mind at the 2024 Indian Music Awards.
