This came out in 2005 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
If I’ve heard the question once, I’ve heard it… well once:
Where can you find a stoner-rock band that unites the power-chord sludge of Black Sabbath, the bombastic boogie of Blue Cheer, the garage-band psychedelia of Brian Jonestown Massacre, the opiated decadence of The Velvet Underground, the stompy guitar-rock of Crazy Horse, the junkie-duo grit of Royal Trux and the interstellar overdrive of Pink Floyd — and one that adds enough pop melody and idiosyncratic arrangements to avoid sounding completely derivative? Well, finally, here’s the answer: Vancouver’s Black Mountain. And for those who feel their bizarre sonic amalgam begs another question — why? — the answer is equally apparent: Because it’s there.
