Classic Album Review: Moxy Früvous | Thornhill

The former Toronto buskers manage to channel John & Paul — but not often enough.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If Barenaked Ladies can blow up bigger than Puff Daddy’s ego in the U.S., why can’t Moxy Früvous?

After all, they’re just as appealingif not more. And just as BNL worship at the altar of Brian Wilson, these ex-buskers from Toronto obviously ask themselves WWJAPD? (What Would John And Paul Bo?) every time they write a tune. And on their seventh CD, they occasionally get the right answer — particularly on the Merseybeat pop of Half As Much and the Macca melody of Sad Girl. Sadly, the rest of the time it seems they contacted George or, even worse, Ringo. Most of Thornhill is a puddle of damp pop, remarkable only for having the worst lyrics this side of a Hallmark card — complete with balloons, clowns and lines like, “I’ll hold your hand if you just need a friend.” Ick. Next time, boys, think: WWBNLD?
