Kàsh Mojo Beefs Up Sparklehorse’s Cow

The ABQ singer-guitarist amplifies the haunting intensity of a Mark Linkous deep cut.

Kàsh Mojo boldy rebrands the devastatingly dark Sparklehorse deep cut Cow for his latest single — showcasing today on Tinnitist.

The latest sneak peek at Mojo’s upcoming debut album Buried Or Replaced, the track finds the Albuquerque singer-guitarist exploring and expanding on late Sparklehorse leader Mark Linkous’s alluring dark landscape, with his baritone voice building on the song’s already haunting lyrics. Laced with harmonious electric guitars, the song inexorably ratchets up the tension, with the listener being immersed in Mojo’s post-rock universe as it reaches a slow crescendo of brooding intensity.

Mojo became obsessed with Sparklehorse after the troubled Linkous took his own life in 2010. He found that the singer-songwriter sometimes hid his vocals and lyrics behind different effects and techniques (like purposely singing into poor-quality microphones for effect). When he cut Buried Or Replaced, he brought in Cow — originally from Sparklehorse’s 1995 debut Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot — because it embodied the mood and sensibility he wanted on the record.

For this single, Mojo is backed by an all-star crew from Austin, including members of Black Joe Lewis And The Honeybears. The song was produced by Bryan Ray (Lonely Child) and Grammy-winning engineer Stuart Sikes (Loretta Lynn, White Stripes, Modest Mouse). Cow is the followup to Mojo’s cover of Townes Van Zandt’s Galveston Gone, also slated to appear on Buried Or Replaced.
