Classic Album Review: Al Green | The Love Songs Collection

You can’t go wrong with the classics. And the Rev. is about as classic as they come.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If music be the food of love, there’s no reason to go hungry at this time of year. As always, there are plenty of new Valentine’s Day albums on the racks to help you get something cooking at your own romantic feast this weekend. Here’s one of them. Now go get ’em, tiger.

COME-ONS: You can’t go wrong with the classics. And the Rev. Al Green is about as classic as they come. So is The Love Songs Collection, which compiles 17 silky smooth, seductive soul classics like L-O-V-E, Here I Am (Come and Take Me), How Can You Mend A Broken Heart and, of course, Let’s Stay Together.

TURN-ONS: Al’s voice is sweet as honey and tangy as Memphis BBQ. No wonder he makes the gals melt like butter.

TURN-OFFS: It’s hard to listen to Let’s Stay Together without picturing Uma Thurman overdosing on smack and then getting stabbed in the heart with a giant needle. Kinda spoils the mood, you know?

GOES WITH: Round beds, black satin sheets, lava lamps, black lights, Zodiac medallions.
