20 Questions With Demi Ramos

The N.Y.C. pop-rocker on painting nails, hummingbird dreams & being a history nerd.

Demi Ramos does not waste time. Yours or hers. Recently, the multi-tasking, fast-rising N.Y.C. pop-rocker got a head start on summer with the exclusive Tinnitist premiere of her energetic indie-rock banger Just A Phase — a song made in an hour during a spontaneous jam in L.A. Today, the singer-songwriter, actor, model, podcast host and all-around shero keeps the momentum going by blasting through my dumb questions. Try to keep up:

Introduce yourself: Name, age (feel free to lie), home base and any other details you’d care to share — height / weight / identifying marks / astrology sign / your choice.
I’m Demi Ramos, I’m from New York City!

What is your musical origin story?
I was studying classical music as a kid and then started seeing all these hardcore shows in New York that inspired me to start a band and play with distortion.

What’s your latest project?
Lots in the works for this year but I recently started acting and that’s been super fun and different.

Tell us about the first song you wrote and / or the first gig you played.
In front of maybe three people at a caviar bar. It was just me and my acoustic guitar and I have no idea how I ended up there.

What is the best / worst / strangest / most memorable performance you have given?
I played a show with BigKlit one Halloween and it was pretty cool seeing a mosh pit set off for two very different music genres in the same lineup. That was special.

What living or dead artists would you like to collaborate with?
A collab with Thom Yorke would sound pretty crazy.

What artist or style of music do you love that would surprise people?
I grew up loving dubstep, one of the first shows I went to was Excision.

What words do you hope people use when they describe you?
Lively and curious.

What useful (or useless) skills do you have outside of music?
I’m really good at painting nails!

What do you collect?
I used to collect rocks as a kid, actually.

If money was no object, where would you live?
I’m a city girl at heart but maybe I’d go and live on the outskirts of London on the countryside with all my friends.

What would you like to be reincarnated as?
A hummingbird would be nice.

Which historical event do you wish you had witnessed?
The suffrage movement.

What’s your idea of perfect happiness / total misery?
Expression = Happiness
Life without headphones = Misery

What are your pet peeves?
Texting something that can be figured out in a 30-second phone call.

What’s your greatest regret?
No regrets!

What are you afraid of?
I’m afraid of not getting enough sleep at night before an early day.

What’s the silliest thing you believed as a child?
I had an imaginary friend named Peggy. Not sure what happened to her haha!

What was your favourite class in school and why?
I was a big history nerd.

What world record would you like to break?
Not a world record but I plan to build an art center where I grew up in the Bronx so kids can have access to lessons and instruments.

What’s the best and / or worst advice you were ever given?
Best advice: Find mentors who inspire you.
