Classic Album Review: The John Entwistle Band | Left For Live Deluxe

The Ox's solo band try to shake the last pennies out of their late boss's pockets.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Man, is Who bassist John Entwistle having a lousy year or what?

First off, he’s dead. Then, to make matters worse, his bandmates barely seemed to notice he passed away last June — Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend were back out on the road before The Ox’s amps had cooled off. Still, they seem positively grief-stricken compared to the lads in Entwistle’s solo band.

In what can only be viewed as a sad attempt to shake a final few pennies out of their old boss’s pockets before heading back to the dole lines, they’ve taken a second-rate 1999 live recording of a club gig, padded it out with a bunch of songs that didn’t make the cut the first time around, and dumped it on to the market as a so-called Deluxe edition. Buyer beware: The set list looks promising thanks to a raft of Who classics like 905, Had Enough, My Wife and so on, but the terrible sound quality and lackadaisical performances will only leave fans even more bummed than already are. Though probably not as bummed out as Entwistle.
