Jan. 1 marks a new beginning for most people. But it spells the end of the line for a lot of musicians, based on the number of artists who have died on this date. Perhaps the most famous is troubled country legend Hank Williams, who perished at age 29 in the back of a car en route to a show in 1953. He’s far from alone: British blues legend Alexis Korner died of lung cancer in 1984 at age 55, self-destructive singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt died at 52 in 1997, ’50s popster Patti Page passed in 2013 at 85, Neil Young‘s second wife Pegi died of cancer in 2019 at age 66, and Mott The Hoople keyboardist Mick Bolton died in 2021 at 72.
