Now Hear This: Lewca | Friday Night Rockstar

Infinite monkeys with typewriters might ape Shakespeare — but it won't be half as fun as this audacious batch of rap-rock from one middle-aged geezer with a microphone.

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “After being in a few bands that fell apart for the usual reasons, Lewca decided to go it alone in 2018. Although he collaborates with a bunch of different musicians on his projects (most often ex-band members or musicians he met on Twitter), his main partner in crime is S.O.A.P., a Parisian drum ’n’ bass DJ and beatmaker he met when they shared a billing at a gig in 2013.

Since 2018 they have released three EPs, and have been working for the last 18 months on two albums: Friday Night Rockstar and Boombap For Boomers (to be released some time in 2023). They expect absolute world domination and unfathomable wealth obviously.

The album Friday Night Rockstar is about time passing, personal doubts and demons, substance abuse and dreams that will never come true. It’s mixed into ’80s-’90s sonic references that influenced Lewca and S.O.A.P. growing up.

Lewca was born in a squat in Brixton, and by age 19 he was living in a squat in Paris. Go figure. After studying fine art and dabbling in film, he started making music just before he was too old to die young. His influences range from class A drugs to expensive rum, and also The Clash, The Streets, Ian Dury, Eminem, Tom Waits, and whoever is making decent music. He currently lives in Normandy, has three kids and a mortgage and semi-domesticated hedgehog named Sonic.”
