Albums Of The Week: Toeheads | A Cruel Winner’s World

Hey, sometimes you just want to listen to three weirdoes from the Motor City bash out three-chord garage nuggets & wail about UFOs, pretty ladies and Black Flag tattoos.

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE:Toeheads are pulverizing Detroit’s garage-rock scene, and their self-produced record A Cruel Winner’s World, is encased in debauchery, sincerity, and relatability.

The dense, jagged lo-fi recordings shake and rattle to the very core; drums like a china cabinet tumbling down a flight of stairs, all being held tightly together by roaring vocal melodies and vehement basslines. This fourth collection of songs (their first 12″ record) is equal parts nostalgic and innovative, evoking their tantalizing essence. There is no rhythm or reason for one to forgo a listen.

“We began writing the songs in wlnter 2020, just before the global pandemic began,” they say. “And finished them whenever we could. it seemed like the world was ending that year, (it still does) and perhaps we would never be able to play them live for people. Given these circumstances, it felt better than maybe it ever has to spend a day sitting around a few beers, cigarettes and joints in a 110° cement room in an old factory with some of your best friends.”
