Sam Casey tries to paper over her self-doubt in her latest single and video Good Fight — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
Accompanied by a colourful and creative video, the up-and-coming singer-songwriter’s newest release is a positive piece of powerhouse, pop, a feminist manifesto toward self-acceptance and against harsh standards perpetuated by a male-dominated industry.
“Good Fight illustrates my personal experience with anxiety, specifically since beginning my musical career,” Casey admits. “The uncertainty and lack of control I have become accustomed to as a musician has forced me to become a more patient being. However, it has also taken its toll on my mental health.
“My role as an artist is to say the difficult things and be honest about the unattractive qualities in oneself, and, in turn, this may slowly minimize the fears of my listener’s self-perceived flaws. If we can be honest about our identity and even allow ourselves to feel shame about certain aspects of our own beings, then we can accept that shame for what it is and move on. We can be more accepting of ourselves and others,” she continues.
“I think that Good Fight is my little inner anthem. I believe the feeling of defeat is universal. Everyone has to accept from time to time that they can put up a good fight, but they can still lose. You know, sometimes you crank that Soulja Boy and sometimes that Soulja Boy cranks YOU.”
The video shows Casey bursting through paper walls — an extension of a key lyrical simile that also supplied the song with its working title. “Good Fight was originally called Fold, as the paper concept is so strong in the lyrics as well as the visuals of this song,” she explains. “However, we decided that Good Fight represented the power that it takes to overcome the feeling of folding into yourself and that is the feeling we wanted to focus on:
“And I fold like I might be made of paper,
I’ve been tearing myself into pieces lately.
I’m blank when I’m on my own
cause I don’t know how to stand up.
When I’m sipping on a downside,
I put up a good fight.”
