Classic DVD Review: Willie Nelson | Nashville Superstar / Great Outlaw Valentine Concert

Two vintage programs starring every country fan’s favourite red-headed stranger.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Call it A Double Dose of WillieWillie Nelson, that is.

This 90-minute DVD has two decent (if decade-old) programs starring every country fan’s favourite red-headed stranger. Nashville Superstar offers an affectionate, light-hearted biography of the singer-songwriter, using a slate of high-quality archival footage to trace the path of Willie’s career — and document his various hairstyles over the years. The Great Outlaw Valentine Concert, meanwhile, presents Willie and his band in the flesh, giving a joyfully laid-back performance in Austin, Tex., on Feb. 14, 1991. There are plenty of hits along the way, including On The Road Again, Always On My Mind, Angel Flying Too Close To The Ground, Whiskey River, Hello Walls and Crazy. If you’re a Willie fanatic, you’d be crazy to pass it up.
