The Niagara Falls singer-songwriter’s latest whimsical delight for audiences tells the tale of an avant-garde eccentric named Hugh MacDonald a relentless local artist in various media. Inspired by the mystique surrounding his life and death, one-man band Thunderclap! decided to immortalize him with a song that does justice to his legend and legacy. Armed with a conducts a cacophony of instruments, Thunderclap! blends cinematic lyricism with a punchy cadence to create something unlike anything you’ve heard recently.

The psychedelic singalong is set to appear on Thunderclap!’s upcoming album Strange Songs For Strange Times, due Oct. 15. Like a sonic Rubik’s Cube carefully manipulated for two years, the LP is a colourful sonic puzzle — while also offering commentary on the state of society and progress in self-actualization. It is no longer taboo to accept people with all their idiosyncrasies, and Thunderclap! Is just taking it all in; society has awakened to its own sense of place in this world.

Thunderclap! made his debut with his 2016 LP Hell Bent On Success — an expertly crafted record that included producer Spookey Ruben and featured notable guests Bob Wiseman (Blue Rodeo), Mary Margaret O’Hara and Dave Clark (Rheostatics, Gord Downie). Thunderclap! has since released singles and projects that draw on his method-acting background and the bottomless well of psychological concepts that propel his art.
