Classic DVD Review: Johnny Thunders | Live: In Cold Blood

Thunders junkies can finally upgrade their grainy VHS copies of this classic gig.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Johnny Thunders junkies have been passing around grainy VHS copies of this show for almost 20 years. Now they can finally upgrade to this technically superior digital transfer.

Originally taped for New York TV in 1982, In Cold Blood captures the former New York Dolls guitarist and first-generation punk in all his drug-addled glory — stumbling, mumbling and fumbling with his guitar strap as he leads his Heartbreakers through sloppy, ass-kicking versions of Too Much Junkie Business, Pipeline, Just Another Girl, Who Needs Girls, Born to Lose and others. At just half an hour, the DVD price tag may seem steep. But for such a magnificent shambles, it’s money well spent.
