Classic DVD Review: The Smashing Pumpkins | Greatest Hits Video Collection 1991-2000

Billy Corgan & co. upgrade their promo clips with extra footage & commentaries.

This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

The Main Course: No surprises here — as expected, it’s 20 Smashing Pumpkins videos, from 1991’s Siva (off their first album Gish) to Everlasting Gaze and Try, Try, Try (from 2000’s swan song CD Machina / The Machines of God).

Side Dishes: Plenty of surprises — a live version of Ode to No One taped at their final show in Chicago last year; a short film called Try; studio footage from the recording of one of their final tracks, Untitled; and a plethora of outtakes, audio commentaries and documentary footage to go with nearly every clip.

Easter Eggs: If you want to see the Untitled video, you have to search for it.

Final Verdict: You’ve likely seen all the videos already. But the vast amount of extra footage and commentary tracks — which can be mixed and matched in a myriad of combinations — can keep you clicking away for hours.
