Classic Album Reviews: The Rat Pack | Eee-O 11: Best of / Live at the Sands

You couldn't dig these sets of swinging Vegas classics more if you had a shovel.

This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Ring-a-ding-ding, pally. The boys are back and ready to party.

Just in time for the remake of Ocean’s 11, here come these ca-razy reissues of classic tracks from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr., aka The Rat Pack. And cat, they are the gasser to end all gassers! Get in the swing with Eee-O 11, a greatest-hits collection of solid-gold studio fare like Ain’t That A Kick In The Head, Me And My Shadow, The Tender Trap, Volare and When You’re Smiling, complete with snazzy, jazzy arrangements and finger-popping big-band backing tracks. But for the full effect, you gotta get Live at the Sands, a full-on dose of full-throttle fun with the trio making hey-hey together onstage in a two-drink-minimum big room back in the swinging ’60s. They deliver high-roller hits like Luck Be A Lady. They roll off plenty of the old, pre-PC yuks (“Ladies and gentlemen, direct from the bar … Dean Martin!”). And they do it all with tux ties unknotted, smokes in hand, and three sheets to the wind. Chickie-baby, you couldn’t dig this more if you had a shovel.
