Sonic Reducers | The Weeknd Gets A New Gig

The Weeknd is doing a TV drama? We have something to say about that.

Just as all actors secretly want to be pop stars, all pop stars want to be actors. Especially these days, now that streaming audio pays somewhere between diddly and squat.

The latest chart-topping singer to make the leap is Canada’s own The Weeknd, who is reportedly going to write, produce and star in a new HBO series titled The Idol, about a pop star whose nightclub-owner boyfriend runs a cult. Sounds intriguing, but will it be any good? We’ll have to wait and see. But you don’t have to wait to hear with publicist and broadcaster extraordinaire Eric Alper and I have to say about it. Join us in today’s Sonic Reducers segment as we break down The Weeknd’s upcoming career change, touch on the history of (and reasons behind) pop stars going into movies and TV, and try to figure out how many award shows The Weeknd will be feuding with next year. Sonic Reducers. One topic. Two music nerds. Five minutes. Everything you need to know.
