Classic Album Review: Billy Gilman | Dare to Dream

Sure, the kid can sing — but does he really know exactly what he's singing about?

This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Sure, the kid can sing like the dickens (though his girlishly high voice is still a little too much like a young Wayne Newton for my taste). But precociously talented or not, hearing someone who rides a scooter sing cheesey country-pop love ballads — with titles like She’s My Girl, The Woman in My Life and Almost Love — is just bizarre. And hearing him do a romantic duet with Alison Krauss is almost as creepy as a Britney Spears/Mick Jagger collaboration. Son, come back when you know what it is you’re singing about.
