Late-Night TV Music (No Time To Dilly-Dally Edition) | Feb. 4, 2021

H.E.R., Baio, Michael Kiwanuka, Olivia Rodrigo and Pentatonix add to a busy Friday.

500-plus emails. 100 new albums or so. Another Bandcamp no-fee day. And a full slate of performances from the Late-Night TV Music world. Yep, sounds like another Friday. Which is to say: No time to dillly-dally. So let’s get right to the music:

My pick of the night: H.E.R., leading her studio band through the slinky new single Fight For You — from the soundtrack to the upcoming film Judas and the Black Messiah — on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Though Vampire Weekender Baio and his friends’ socially distanced take on the fittingly deadpan Dead Hand Control on Late Night With Seth Meyers isn’t far behind. For something even quieter, a pair of performers decided to go the solo-piano ballad route: Olivia Rodrigo performed her inexplicably giant hit Drivers Licence on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, while Michael Kiwanuka returned to the scene of the crime to sing Solid Ground on The Late Late Show With James Corden. And finally, for those who don’t get enough Pentatonix every holiday season, they shared the track The Lucky Ones on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Good for them. Glad to see someone feels that way.
