Indie Roundup | 4 Songs For Your Christmas Eve

Believe it or not, some people actually sent me new videos and singles today.

Are there really people sending you videos and singles on Christmas Eve, you ask? Yep. And here they are. Enjoy. And enjoy your Christmas while you’re at it. See you on the other side.

1 | Egg Drop Soup | Swamp Ass

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “It’s gonna be a punk rock Christmas this year. From the sunny banks of southern California, all-womxn group Egg Drop Soup are dropping their music video Swamp Ass the day before releasing their second EP, Eat Snacks And Bleed. The project was conceived from the creative chemistry of vocalist/bassist Sam Westervelt and guitarist Olivia Saperstein. “Olivia and I just have this telepathy in our songwriting,” Westervelt says. The two played in another L.A. band before forming Egg Drop Soup in 2017. Now with Bailey Chapman on drums, the group unfurl their first video. Swamp Ass is shot in a gorgeous house deep in farm country by director Augie Duke and cinematographer Dexter Wandel. The video is a nod to both The Virgin Suicides and Sharp Objects and features the group — dressed in ‘80s prom gowns — dancing, dosing themselves, and commiserating over tea and tarot-card readings. “We’re stuck in this time warp, dealing with issues of self worth and peer pressure,” Westervelt says. “The repetitive nature of existence is all we feel, sometimes. We’re isolated from the outside world now in a lot of ways.”

2 | Forged In Black | A Spaceman Came Travelling

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “2020 has been a tough year for everyone and it’s not been as easy as usual to find that festive spirit as we all struggle with different levels of lockdown and isolation. That being the case, Forged In Black wanted to send something out to their fans to try and rekindle some seasonal joy. They may be distanced from each other but they have managed to put together a new video to accompany a yuletide single — a metallized version of the Chris De Burgh Xmas favourite A Spaceman Came Travelling. Bassist Kieron Rochester explains: “Over the Christmas period we normally celebrate by playing a yuletide gig and getting suitably merry, but in the absence of shows we thought we’d do something a little different and release a festive quarantine cover. A Spaceman Came Travelling is our favourite Christmas tune because of how atmospheric it is, and we wanted to put our own little spin on it.”

3 | Haven Chills | Triangulate the Will of Man (Choir Boy Version)

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE: “Vancouver’s Haven Chills have released the single Triangulate the Will of Man (Choir Boy Version). This song showcases the delicate vocal stylings of Dan Potter presented un-accompanied. Individual layers of singing were recorded to give the listener an impossible scenario: A choir of one. As performances have been put under lockdown worldwide, this track turns a key and unlocks heavenly textures that create a surreal rendition of one of Haven Chills’ most philosophical and sardonically witty songs. In many ways Triangulate the Will of Man (Choir Boy Version) is a piece of music that would be voted the most least likely to be put to a male chorus but that is the world we currently live in. Says Potter: “Sometimes doing the opposite of what is required produces more interesting and desirable results.”

4 | Kunt and the Gang | Boris Johnson Is A Fucking Cunt (Single Edit)

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE:Kunt and the Gang are the U.K.’s foremost minor Internet hit singer and Fringe comedy act, probably best known for their UK top 75 hits Fucksticks and Use My Arsehole As A Cunt. Oh, and not forgetting that Jimmy Savile song. “FAQsWhy are you doing this? Because Boris Johnson is a fucking cunt and by the way he behaves I’m just not sure anyone has ever told him. Come on Kunt, surely Boris is doing as well as anyone could do under very difficult circumstances? Oh fuck off.”
